I don’t usually write reviews, but I wanted to share this in case it helps someone in a similar situation. We consulted Dr. Rajiv Lochan for cholangiocarcinoma surgery. From the first meeting, he and his team were clear, straightforward, and gave us the confidence we needed to move ahead. He explained things in a way that was easy to understand without overcomplicating it. During surgery, he and his team handled complications that came up, which we later understood could have been difficult to manage without the right expertise and skill. Post-surgery, Rajiv Lochan and his team were patient and accessible. They took the time to answer our questions, even when we asked the same things more than once, which really helped us stay at ease during recovery. Looking back, we’re very thankful for how everything was handled and would recommend him to anyone looking for a skilled and dependable specialist.

A liver transplant is recommended when the liver can no longer function properly due to advanced disease. Common conditions include cirrhosis, liver failure, hepatocellular carcinoma, chronic hepatitis B or C, fatty liver disease, genetic liver disorders, and severe acute liver failure. When medications and other treatments cannot restore liver function, transplantation becomes the most effective life-saving option. Early evaluation by a liver transplant specialist helps determine transplant eligibility, identify potential donors, and plan comprehensive treatment for patients with advanced liver disease.

A living donor liver transplant involves transplanting a portion of a healthy liver from a living donor, usually a family member or compatible donor. The liver has the unique ability to regenerate in both the donor and recipient. A deceased donor liver transplant uses a liver from a donor who has passed away but donated organs. Living donor transplantation often reduces waiting time and improves outcomes, while deceased donor transplantation depends on organ availability through national transplant registries.

HPB surgery refers to procedures involving the liver, pancreas, and biliary system (gallbladder and bile ducts). These surgeries are performed to treat conditions such as liver tumors, pancreatic cancer, bile duct cancers, gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, and complex hepatobiliary disorders. HPB surgery requires advanced surgical expertise because these organs are closely connected to major blood vessels and digestive structures. Specialized HPB surgeons perform complex procedures such as liver resections, pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple surgery), and bile duct reconstruction to treat both benign and malignant diseases.

Liver cancer treatment depends on the stage of the disease and the patient’s liver function. Surgical options include liver resection (removal of the tumor-bearing portion of the liver) and liver transplantation. In some cases, surgery is combined with other therapies such as targeted treatment, chemotherapy, or interventional radiology procedures. A multidisciplinary team evaluates each patient to determine the most effective treatment strategy. Early diagnosis and specialized hepatobiliary surgical care significantly improve survival and long-term outcomes for patients with liver cancer.

Pancreatic cancer surgery is typically recommended when the tumor is localized and has not spread extensively to other organs. The most common procedure is pancreaticoduodenectomy, also known as the Whipple procedure, which removes the tumor along with surrounding structures if required. Other surgeries include distal pancreatectomy and total pancreatectomy depending on tumor location. These complex procedures are performed by experienced HPB surgeons and are often combined with chemotherapy or radiation therapy as part of a comprehensive cancer treatment plan.

Recovery after liver transplant surgery varies depending on the patient’s overall health and the complexity of the procedure. Most patients stay in the hospital for about two to three weeks following the transplant. Full recovery may take several months as the body gradually adapts to the new liver and medications. Regular follow-up visits, medications to prevent rejection, and careful monitoring of liver function are essential. With proper care and medical supervision, many patients can return to normal activities and enjoy significantly improved quality of life.

A living liver donor is typically a healthy adult between 18 and 55 years of age with a compatible blood group and normal liver function. Donors must undergo detailed medical evaluation including blood tests, imaging studies, and psychological assessments to ensure safety. The procedure involves removing a portion of the donor’s liver, which regenerates naturally over time. Donor safety is the highest priority, and transplantation teams follow strict protocols to minimize risks while ensuring successful outcomes for both donor and recipient.

Cirrhosis is a chronic condition where healthy liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue due to long-term liver damage. It can result from viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, fatty liver disease, or genetic disorders. Early stages can be managed with medications and lifestyle changes, but advanced cirrhosis may require liver transplantation. A specialized liver care team evaluates complications such as portal hypertension, ascites, and liver failure to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

A multidisciplinary approach involves collaboration between different medical specialists to provide comprehensive treatment for complex liver and digestive diseases. This team often includes hepatologists, gastroenterologists, HPB surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, anesthesiologists, and intensive care specialists. By combining expertise from multiple disciplines, patients receive personalized treatment plans that address all aspects of their condition. This approach improves surgical outcomes, reduces complications, and ensures coordinated care throughout diagnosis, treatment, surgery, and long-term recovery.

Like all major surgeries, liver transplantation carries certain risks including infection, bleeding, rejection of the transplanted organ, and complications related to medications. However, modern surgical techniques, improved immunosuppressive medications, and advanced critical care have significantly improved transplant success rates. Careful patient evaluation and postoperative monitoring help reduce these risks. When performed in specialized transplant centers by experienced surgeons, liver transplantation offers excellent long-term survival and quality of life for patients with advanced liver disease.

Many liver diseases can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices and early medical care. Key preventive steps include maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol consumption, avoiding unsafe injections or blood exposure, getting vaccinated for hepatitis A and B, and following a balanced diet. Regular health checkups and liver function tests are important for individuals at risk of liver disease. Early diagnosis and timely medical treatment can prevent progression to severe liver damage or the need for transplantation.

You should consult a liver transplant specialist if you have advanced liver disease, persistent jaundice, cirrhosis, liver cancer, recurrent complications of liver failure, or severe pancreatico-biliary disorders. Early consultation helps determine whether surgical treatment or transplantation is necessary. A transplant specialist will evaluate your medical history, conduct diagnostic tests, and guide you through treatment options. Early referral improves outcomes by allowing adequate time for transplant evaluation, donor identification, and comprehensive pre-transplant care.
